Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started with services?
After you submit a request via my contact page, I will contact you within 24hrs to schedule a complimentary 20 minute video consultation. This consultation allows us to discuss the therapy options available to you along with available times, days and cost of sessions. Afterward, should you feel comfortable moving forward, we will schedule a weekly standing therapy appointment. Prior to your first therapy session, I will send you an email invite to my client portal where you will complete the necessary intake forms at least 24 hours prior to your first appointment. It's important to submit these forms the day before your appointment so that the therapist has sufficient time to review them. Incomplete forms means we will spend your first session completing them which is not the best use of the time.

What does intake paperwork entail?

Once we decide to work together, I will send you forms electronically that outline privacy and confidentiality requirements along with my office policies and fee agreement. You will also complete an assessment questionnaire about your personal, family, and relationship history along with some anxiety or depression questionnaires to determine how to best support you. You will sign an informed consent form that indicates you agree to enter into treatment with me and understand the terms and conditions of my services. You also agree that any cancellations with less than a 24hr notice will result in a cancellation fee unless the cancellation is due to a real emergency.

What can I expect in my first session?

You and I will review your intake forms together and answer any questions you may have about the process, then set therapeutic goals. We shall discuss your reasons for seeking counseling, goals you hope to achieve while attending therapy and potential duration of treatment. The first session is focused on defining the problem area and expectations for change.

Who can use your counseling services?

I work with adults age 18 years old and over. I am able to provide international online therapy globally. Most of my clients are based throughout Europe. I also serve US Military Families in Europe.

Where are your counseling services located?

For in person sessions I work from an office at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 104-108,1012 SG, Amsterdam, Netherlands .
For online sessions I'm located either in my office or in my private confidential home.

Will my sessions be confidential?

All sessions and communications with me are strictly private and confidential. At no point will any of your information be shared with others unless there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or a child. I will review this with you in your first session and you will receive a written copy of my privacy and confidential policies.

What is therapy or counseling like?

Therapy, also called psychotherapy or counseling, is the process of meeting with a therapist to resolve problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, relationship issues, and/or somatic responses (sensations in the body). It is an in depth conversation with someone to fully listen, support and guide you. Sessions are scheduled weekly and are 50 minutes in duration. This is an industry standard time allotment for individuals and couples that has proven effective in studies. Longer sessions that are often marketed now a days, are not always more effective. They can lead to information overload, mental saturation as well as emotional exhaustion making the session far less effective. Sessions are ideally structured, efficient and effective for constructive emotional processing.

Why don't you accept insurance?
At this time, I am not working with Dutch insurance providers nor any Expat private insurance providers. Most insurance companies do not reimburse for couples or family counseling and require a mental health diagnosis for any type of therapy whether individual, couples or family in order for the service to be reimbursable and deemed "medically necessary". The majority of individuals do not fit into this category.

In regards to military, I am not in network with Tricare so cost for services are paid up front out of pocket. In some cases, dependents may be approved for off installation services to be reimbursed. Please check with Tricare or your private insurance provider.

Sometimes it is possible to deduct therapy cost from your income tax when you are self-employed. Please consult your accountant about this possibility.

How many sessions will I need to feel better?
The number of sessions necessary greatly varies from client to client depending on their current level of emotional well being, life history, previous counseling and support system. Some individuals simply need a safe space for a phase of life adjustment with a trained empathetic person and are feeling better in about 10 sessions, while others dealing with more chronic or cyclical problems may need up to 20+ sessions.

What is the recommended Frequency to attend Therapy?

The best results with therapy are gained with consistent weekly sessions and I highly recommend you to dedicate the time and effort to spend the least amount of time and money in therapy.
For individual therapy, we can discuss together reducing your frequency to every other week if there is room on my schedule.

For couples, I only offer weekly therapy as EFT for Couples (Emotional Focused Therapy) is designed to be 10-25 sessions. I find couples attending at a lower frequency tend to stagnant and be distracted by life outside the therapy room thereby impeding the progress.

What are contraindications to Couples Therapy?

-
Active risk of abuse or violence between partners (emotional, physical or sexual abuse)
-
Active untreated or unmanaged mental illness symptoms including unmanaged trauma
-
Active addiction or substance abuse with one or both partners. A person must have at least 1 year of sustained sobriety prior to engaging in couples therapy
-
One or both parties have already made the decision to separate or divorce. If this is the case, we will not engage in couples therapy, but can decide together what your goal for coming to therapy would be. Some people would still like to work on getting closure in a way that is healthy, and understand what has happened in the past. It is important to explicitly decide the goal together, setting clear expectations and boundaries.
-
One or both parties are engaged in outside relationships, while this is not consensually agreed upon by both partners. In the case of an affair, there needs to be a willingness to disclose this to the other partner, and the willingness to work on restoring the relationship.
